I don’t know about you, but I want that Jesus glow—that glow that radiates from the inside out. The type of glow that speaks volumes because it’s giving fruits of the spirit. I want a light so bright that those who are lost in sin will ask how they can have it too, so I can share about our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I want this little light of mine to shine because the Lord has lifted me from my past, cleansed me, and now calls me His own. I can’t help but proclaim His name from the rooftops because I don’t deserve His grace and mercy.
Like the Apostle Paul, I see myself as the least of all the saints because of my previous life. Today, I write as a daughter of the Kingdom. Make no mistake, I’m still a work in progress and have a long way to go. I fall short every day, but that’s all part of the process, right? Repent, pick up your cross, and continue to follow Him.
Before I became a Christian, I lived an ungodly lifestyle filled with fornication, drinking, partying, and witchcraft, just to name a few. I shared parts of my story in my first blog post titled “The Prodigal Daughter,” if you’re interested in reading my testimony.
Now that my eyes are opened to the truth, I strive to live a life that glorifies God. I desire such a radical transformation in my character that it will be undeniable that God's hand is upon my life. Each day, I pray to become more like the Proverbs 31 woman.
So, let’s take a deep dive into scripture and explore the type of woman God has created us to be.
Sis, let’s grow together and glow together!
This is a four-part series where we will gain a better understanding of true godly
Character
Mindset
Wisdom
Calling & Purpose
One verse that really resonated with me while reading Proverbs 31 is verse 30 (KJV), which states, “Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.”
I believe that a woman of godly character is one who fears the Lord above all else. This fear is not about being afraid of God; rather, it refers to having a deep respect for His authority and being in awe of His holiness and power.
Proverbs 1:7 (KJV) tells us, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” Additionally, Proverbs 3:5-7 (KJV) says, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil.”
A woman who fears the Lord will seek Him for wisdom, knowledge, and instruction. She’s not reliant on her own understanding. Being wise in our own eyes can lead us down a destructive path. I speak from experience; before coming to Christ, I was wise in my own eyes, which led me into a sinful lifestyle that separated me from our Father. I praise God for His grace and mercy, as I now have the opportunity to live a life that glorifies Him. I now desire to live a life surrendered because of the reverence I have for the Lord.
This brings me to my next point: a godly woman is wise. Proverbs 31:26 (KJV) says, “She openeth her mouth with wisdom, and in her tongue is the law of kindness.” If I’ve learned anything on this journey called life, it’s that true wisdom comes from the Lord. I aspire to be a woman full of wisdom in my later years because, unfortunately, I was foolish in my earlier years. This “fool” that keeps being mentioned throughout Proverbs was me, haha. Thank God I can laugh about it now, but on a serious note, it’s not funny. I acted in ways that I’m not proud of, but now that I’m clothed in His righteousness, I am moving differently.
The Proverbs 31 woman is fruitful in all areas of her life because her wisdom comes from the Lord. In this chapter, we get a little glimpse of the complete trust and confidence her husband has in her, which adds insight into her character. She is calm, loving, kind and intelligent.
Many of us strive to excel in all areas of life, but often we fall short. It can feel like an impossible undertaking. However, the Proverbs 31 woman knew the secret ingredient: she was dependent on the giver of life. The Lord was her secret weapon.
While many Christians know Jesus as their savior, they have yet to fully surrender to His Lordship. We can be so prideful! We cannot navigate life successfully in our own strength; we need God. Those who seem to manage successfully on their own are often deceived and are merely chasing after the wind, as they remain unfulfilled inside. I understand that allowing someone else full control over every aspect of life is challenging, but this is God we’re talking about. I too struggle with pride, so please keep me in your prayers. I strive to lead a life of daily repentance, and I am grateful that the Lord is teaching me humility.
Another beautiful characteristic of the Proverbs 31 woman is her humility. My current read is Humility: The Journey Toward Holiness by Andrew Murray. I love this quote from the book: “Here is the path to the higher life: down, lower down! Just as water always seeks and fills the lowest place, so the moment God finds men abased and empty, His glory and power flow in to exalt and to bless.”
The Proverbs 31 woman exemplifies humility through her selfless service. She seems to find joy in serving others. We learn that her husband trusts her because she does him good and not evil. She works willingly with her hands, rises early to feed her household, gives a portion to her maidens, stretches out her hand to the poor, and ensures that her household is clothed with scarlet during winter.
Additionally, she is productive because she carefully considers the ways of her household. What an inspiration! The Proverbs 31 woman is truly about the Father’s business. Let's take a moment to examine ourselves. Do we really have a servant’s heart? Are we willing to put others before ourselves?
Lastly, I want to highlight the productivity of the Proverbs 31 woman. She is busy and does not eat the bread of idleness. In Proverbs 31:13-19, we read that she worketh willingly with her hands, bringeth food from afar, riseth early to feed her household, strengtheneth her arms, perceiveth that her merchandise is good, and layeth her hands to the spindle. Whew! I often struggle with the little I have on my plate, but after reading about how productive the Proverbs 31 woman is, I feel inspired to steward what God has placed in my hands well. I acknowledge that I have fallen short many times in the past, but I am committed to making the necessary changes moving forward and allowing the Lord to transform me.
What I admire about the Proverbs 31 woman is her selflessness. I can’t help but think of all the lives she has impacted due to her servant’s heart. She truly embodies humility by being an empty vessel, allowing the power of God to work in and through her. This glow that we have as believers is not of our own doing. It's the Holy Spirit within us. The more we walk in the Spirit the brighter our light will shine.
As I mentioned earlier, let’s grow and glow together. I hope you enjoyed the beginning of this series, and I look forward to diving deeper into the mindset of the Proverbs 31 woman in the next post.
Let’s Pray
Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of life. Please forgive us for the times we have fallen short in our roles as daughters, sisters, friends, wives, mothers, employees, and bosses. Grant us the wisdom to nurture and steward the blessings you have placed in our hands well. Empower us to become the godly women you designed us to be. In Jesus' mighty name, Amen.
