WHEN HEAVEN INTERRUPTED A HAIR APPOINTMENT

ASTROLOGY IS DEMONIC
ASTROLOGY IS DEMONIC

I looked down at my watch; it was a quarter till three. Crystal’s appointment was at 2:30, and she had not called to inform me that she was either not coming or running late. My next appointment is at 4:30, so I still have time if she arrives soon. I took a moment to take a deep breath and said a quick prayer, asking the Holy Spirit to guard my tongue before giving her a call.

As soon as I started dialing, the door swung open, and she rushed in.

“Kasey, I am so sorry I’m late! I ran into traffic.”

“Hi, Crystal! Come on in. I still have time to squeeze you in before my next appointment. Just be sure to call me next time to let me know you’re running behind.”

Crystal is one of my new clients. I've only done her hair a few times, so I'm trying to be patient. She has beautiful natural hair, and today she booked a silk press and haircut, which should only take about an hour and fifteen minutes. Thankfully, my next client is Maya, who has been my best friend since high school, so I’m sure she won’t mind if I’m a few minutes behind. I will, however, give her a call to let her know, because I’m really big on respecting people’s time.

“Is it your birthday?” Crystal asked, noticing the balloons and card display at my station.

“It was yesterday,” I replied.

“Happy belated Birthday! So you’re a Pisces, right?”

“Thank you! No. I no longer identify with zodiac signs. The Lord pulled me out of witchcraft,” I said.

“Witchcraft?!” Crystal exclaimed, almost choking on her water. “That sounds a bit extreme, don’t you think? Zodiac signs are no different than personality assessments. Honestly, it makes sense that you’re a hairstylist because Pisces are usually very creative.”

“I’m creative because God has blessed me with my gifts, not because of a zodiac sign. I used to believe the same thing until I gave my life to Christ, and He revealed the truth to me. If you're open to it, I would love to share more about why I don’t believe in astrology anymore and why it is considered a sin.”

“You have my attention because calling it witchcraft is crazy to me. I don’t understand why Christians call everything a sin. I don’t mean to disrespect your faith, Kasey, but I’m definitely curious about why you believe that.”

I stepped away from my station to grab my Bible, which I usually keep in my salon suite to read between clients. I said a quick prayer internally, asking the Lord to open her eyes and speak through me. I opened my Bible to Isaiah 47:13-14. I have sticky notes all over my Bible to easily find verses I want to revisit, so I was able to find it quickly.

Crystal sat in the chair with her arms folded and an annoyed look on her face. I could tell she didn’t really care to hear what I had to say; she just wanted an opportunity to prove me wrong. I knew I might lose her as a client after today, but planting a seed that could potentially save her soul was far more important to me. So, I began to read:

“All the counsel you have received has only worn you out! Let your astrologers come forward, those stargazers who make predictions month to month; let them save you from what is coming upon you. Surely they are like stubble; the fire will burn them up. They cannot even save themselves from the power of the flame. These are not coals for warmth; this is not a fire to sit by.” (NIV)

I noticed her facial expression changed. She no longer looked annoyed; now she was sitting up in her chair with her eyebrows raised.

“This passage was a prophetic judgment against Babylon, which was known for practicing astrology. God promises judgment due to their pride and warns them that destruction will come upon them suddenly one day,” I continued.

“I’ve never heard that before. I grew up in church and have always been told it was a sin, but no one has ever explained further. I’m still confused about why it’s wrong, though,” Crystal added.

I could tell she genuinely wanted to understand.

“Well, the short answer is because God says so, and that is enough of a reason to leave it alone in my opinion. I used to love astrology. I learned so much about it that I could have been an astrologer instead of a hairstylist,” I said with a chuckle as I shook my head in disbelief at how lost I was.

“Really? Now this is interesting because I assumed you didn’t know much about it and that’s why you were dismissive of it.”

“Look down for me, please,” I said as I started to cut her hair. “I attend Pathway Church. Have you heard of it?”

“Yes, I pass it daily on my way to work. Right off of Main Street?”

“Yes! You should come sometime. I love Pastor Bradley and his wife, Stephanie. I’ve learned so much attending their church. Anyway, a few years ago, the pastor did a sermon teaching against the occult, and my eyes were opened. I repented and never looked back. Now that I know it’s demonic, I stay far away from it. He revealed that each zodiac sign is most likely a high-ranking demon. When Satan fell from heaven, he took one-third of the angels with him, who became demons. Some of those demons are perhaps the zodiac signs.”

“Wow, that’s wild! I didn’t know,” Crystal says.

“To address your question about why this is wrong: it's because you are coming into agreement with a demonic spirit and adopting its characteristics. For instance, someone who identifies as a Scorpio takes on the traits associated with that sign, such as being vengeful, possessive, manipulative, controlling, and overly sexual. When a person aligns themselves with that demonic spirit, they begin to embody traits that were never part of their true identity.

Instead, we should seek God, our Creator, to discover who we truly are. He knows us intimately; the Bible even says He counts the number of hairs on our heads. Therefore, exploring astrology is misguided because it leads you to seek your identity outside of Christ. As a believer, I find my identity in what God says I am, not in what a demon suggests I should be.

May I pray for you?”

“Sure.”

“Heavenly Father, Thank You for allowing me to share Your truth with Crystal. I ask that You remove the scales from her eyes. Draw near to her, Lord, and show her who You created her to be…”

As I'm praying, I hear someone walk in. I look up and see Maya. She stands near the door with her head bowed, waiting for me to finish praying.

I greet Maya and introduce her to Crystal, bringing her into our conversation. Maya joins in and ministers to Crystal as well and shares her testimony of how God restored her marriage and transformed her life. Last year, Maya’s husband filed for divorce, but God turned their situation around. Healing them individually and as a couple. I didn't think Maya would be able to forgive and move past it, but God is so good! Maya also shared how she was lukewarm in her faith, but after visiting Pathway, she decided to join the church and hasn’t missed a Sunday since.

We invite Crystal to our church and she agrees to attend. I know God sent her to me, and I am so thankful that He used me to plant a seed. I will continue to pray for her salvation.

Maya was my last appointment of the day. After she left, I sat in my salon suite and took a moment to pray and worship God for how He had moved throughout the day. I pray daily for His will, not mine, and He never ceases to amaze me. “Thank you, Lord!” I said out loud as I locked up for the night.
